Strong Start to FY27 for Indian Auto Industry
The Indian passenger vehicle market opened FY27 on a positive note, with most automakers posting solid year-on-year (YoY) growth in April 2026. While competition intensified across segments, one name remained firmly on top — Maruti Suzuki.
The brand maintained a commanding lead, significantly ahead of rivals like Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Hyundai Motor India.
Maruti Suzuki Leads by a Huge Margin
Maruti Suzuki recorded 1,87,704 units in April 2026, reflecting:
- 35% YoY growth
- 10.8% increase over March 2026
The growth was largely fueled by GST reductions on small cars, boosting demand for hatchbacks and entry-level SUVs.
👉 Interestingly, Maruti continues to operate at a scale where its closest competitors sell less than one-third of its volume — highlighting its unmatched dominance in India.
Tata Motors Holds Second Spot
Tata Motors secured second position with 59,000 units in April.
- 30.5% YoY growth
- 11.9% decline compared to March
Despite a monthly dip, Tata’s strong product lineup, especially in EVs and compact SUVs, continues to attract buyers.

Mahindra Stays Strong with SUVs
Mahindra & Mahindra came in third with 56,331 units.
- 8% YoY growth
- 6.5% MoM decline
Mahindra’s SUV-focused strategy remains effective in a highly competitive market.
Hyundai Achieves Record April Sales
Hyundai Motor India ranked fourth with 51,902 units.
- 17% YoY growth
- Slight MoM decline
A major highlight was the record-breaking performance of the Venue, which sold over 12,000 units in April — its highest ever monthly tally.
Toyota Completes Top 5
Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported 30,159 units.
- 21% YoY growth
- 14.1% MoM drop
The key milestone for Toyota was the Innova HyCross crossing 2 lakh cumulative sales, strengthening its premium MPV segment leadership.
